The best wedding venues in the Middle East and Africa

From riad courtyards in Marrakesh to barefoot lagoons in Mauritius, this is a region of extremes. Here is where to actually marry, and the honest truth about the legal paperwork.

Last reviewed August 2025
Our verdict

The Middle East and Africa reward couples who choose a country for its strengths rather than a single look. Mauritius and Seychelles give you genuine legal marriage and easy beach luxury. Dubai gives you scale and slick logistics. Marrakesh and the Cape Winelands give you atmosphere and food.

The one thing to settle first is the law. Outside Mauritius, Seychelles, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates for non Muslim couples, most weddings here are symbolic, with the legal marriage done at home.

Guest travel is the quiet cost. The venue is rarely the biggest line on the budget once flights and rooms are counted.

The quick answer

For most couples the strongest choices in this region are Mauritius and Seychelles for legally simple beach weddings, Marrakesh for atmosphere, the Cape Winelands for food and scenery, and Dubai or Oman for large polished celebrations. Plan the legal marriage at home unless you choose Mauritius, Seychelles, South Africa or, as a non Muslim couple, the United Arab Emirates.

When to marry here

The region has many seasons.

There is no single window across such a large region. Broadly, the Gulf and Egypt suit the winter months, Morocco rewards spring and autumn, the Cape Winelands shine from October to April, Mauritius is best from May to November, and Zanzibar is at its driest from June to October.

The practical things, told straight.

Getting there

Most of the region is one connection from Europe through Dubai, Doha, Addis Ababa, Marrakesh or Cape Town. North American guests should expect a long haul flight plus a connection. The Indian Ocean islands route conveniently through the Gulf hubs.

What it costs

Mauritius and South Africa offer the best luxury for money, while Dubai and the flagship Oman hotels sit at the top end. Budget guest flights and rooms separately, since they often outweigh the venue. Treat all figures as indicative ranges, reviewed August 2025.

The legal bit

This varies enormously. Mauritius and Seychelles are straightforward for foreigners, South Africa is valid with paperwork, and Dubai now allows civil marriage for non Muslim couples. Morocco, Egypt, Zanzibar and Oman are usually symbolic, with the legal marriage handled at home.

Make it a journey

A regional strength is pairing the wedding with a honeymoon or safari. The Cape Winelands and Zanzibar sit naturally alongside South African and Tanzanian safaris, while the islands and Gulf are ready made honeymoon bases.

Common questions

Marrying in this region, answered.

Will our marriage be legally valid if we marry in this region?

+

It depends entirely on the country. It is straightforward in Seychelles and Mauritius, valid with paperwork in South Africa, and possible for non Muslim couples in the United Arab Emirates since 2023. In Morocco, Egypt, Zanzibar and Oman most couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony abroad.

Where is the best value for a luxury wedding here?

+

Mauritius and South Africa give the most luxury for the money. Dubai and the flagship Oman hotels are the premium end. Whatever you choose, budget guest flights and accommodation separately, as they often cost more than the venue itself.

When should we marry to avoid bad weather?

+

Broadly: the Gulf and Egypt in winter, Morocco in spring or autumn, the Cape Winelands from October to April, Mauritius from May to November to avoid the cyclone season, Seychelles in April to May or October to November, and Zanzibar from June to October.

How hard is the travel for our guests?

+

Easier than people expect. Dubai, Cape Town and Marrakesh are very well connected, and the islands route through Dubai, Doha or Addis Ababa. Expect one connection from most of Europe and a long haul plus a connection from North America.

Can we combine the wedding with a safari or honeymoon?

+

Yes, and it is one of the region's strengths. The Cape Winelands and Zanzibar pair naturally with safaris, while the islands and the Gulf make easy honeymoon bases right after the wedding.
