Our verdict

Stow sits at the centre of the prettiest stretch of the Cotswolds, within minutes of some of England's finest country house hotels.

The venues are exclusive use manors and one grand estate rather than large hotels, which suits a weekend among friends.

Book the summer Saturdays early and check each venue holds a civil ceremony licence.

The quick answer

Stow-on-the-Wold, a honey stone market town at the heart of the Cotswolds, is one of the loveliest bases for an English country wedding. The best venues sit in the villages around it, from the exclusive use manor houses of Lower and Upper Slaughter to the grand estate at Cornwell, the organic farm at Daylesford and the private country house of Foxhill Manor near Broadway. Late spring and summer are best, when the gardens are at their finest. Moreton-in-Marsh station links to London Paddington in around an hour and a half, and licensed venues can host the legal ceremony itself.

Why marry here

Honey stone and chocolate box villages.

Stow-on-the-Wold is the highest of the Cotswold market towns, a square of honey coloured stone buildings, antique shops and old coaching inns set on the wold. It is unmistakably English, and the country around it is the picture most people hold of the Cotswolds, drystone walls, sheep dotted hills and villages of mellow gold stone. For a wedding, the appeal is understatement, beauty that needs no decoration and a sense of being somewhere quietly perfect.

The venues sit in the villages that ring the town. A few minutes away the twin hamlets of Lower and Upper Slaughter hold two of England's most romantic country house hotels, The Slaughters Manor House and Lords of the Manor, both available for exclusive use beside the little River Eye. To the south east, Cornwell Manor offers a grand private estate with a ballroom, a church and a marquee lawn for larger weddings, while Daylesford brings a celebrated organic farm and Foxhill Manor a private country house near Broadway. These are places to take whole, for a weekend rather than an afternoon.

The honest cautions are weather, season and licensing. English summers are lovely but never guaranteed, so a wet weather plan matters, and the best venues book their summer Saturdays a year or more ahead. Because the smaller manors cap at intimate numbers, larger weddings lean on Cornwell or a marquee. And for a legally binding ceremony on site, the venue must hold a civil marriage licence, so confirm that early. Plan around all three, and Stow gives you the most quintessentially English of weddings.

Cost and logistics

The practical things, told straight.

The Cotswolds is among the most sought after wedding regions in England, and exclusive use weekends sit at the top of it. Treat every figure as indicative and confirm directly, because catering, the season and a midweek date move the total far more than the venue fee alone.

What it costs

As an indicative November 2025 guide, a Cotswolds wedding for 50 to 150 guests often lands between GBP 20,000 and GBP 60,000 all in, with luxury exclusive use weekends rising higher. Venue hire alone on a peak summer Saturday commonly runs GBP 5,000 to GBP 15,000, and a grand estate weekend can begin around GBP 30,000.

Getting there

Moreton-in-Marsh and Kingham stations sit on the Cotswold Line, with London Paddington around an hour and a half away. Birmingham is reachable by rail with a change, and Heathrow, Birmingham and Bristol airports serve overseas guests. The villages are rural, so plan transfers and parking.

The legal bit

In England both partners must give notice at a register office at least 29 days ahead, and a civil ceremony must take place at a venue licensed for marriage, with a registrar present. Confirm each venue holds a current licence. An on site church, as at Cornwell, is a religious or blessing setting governed separately.

When to marry here

May to September is peak, when the gardens are at their best, though the weather is never guaranteed, so a wet weather plan matters. Spring and early autumn offer good light and easier dates, and a midweek or winter date can cost notably less.

Common questions

Stow, answered.

How much does a Cotswolds wedding cost?

+

As an indicative November 2025 guide, a wedding for 50 to 150 guests often sits between GBP 20,000 and GBP 60,000 all in, with luxury exclusive use weekends higher. Venue hire alone on a peak summer Saturday commonly runs GBP 5,000 to GBP 15,000. Confirm pricing directly.

Can we hold the legal ceremony at the venue?

+

Yes, if the venue holds a civil marriage licence and a registrar attends. Both partners must give notice at a register office at least 29 days beforehand. Confirm each venue's licence early, as it shapes whether the ceremony can be held on site or at a nearby church or register office.

When is the best time to marry in the Cotswolds?

+

May to September, when the gardens are at their finest, though English weather is never guaranteed so a wet weather plan is wise. Spring and early autumn give good light and easier dates, and a midweek or winter date can cost notably less.

How do guests reach Stow-on-the-Wold?

+

Moreton-in-Marsh and Kingham stations sit on the Cotswold Line, with London Paddington around an hour and a half away. The villages are rural, so plan transfers and parking, particularly for evening departures.

What is the largest venue near Stow?

+

Cornwell Manor can host up to around 300 guests in a marquee on its lawn, alongside the house and church. The Slaughters manors are more intimate, capped around 120, so larger weddings tend to use Cornwell or a marquee setting.
