Our verdict

A former monastery turned Four Seasons, cloistered and grand above Taormina, with Mount Etna on one side and the sea on the other.

San Domenico Palace is a fourteenth century Dominican monastery reborn as a Four Seasons hotel, set high on the hill of Taormina with views over Taormina Bay and toward Mount Etna. Ancient cloisters, a Chiesa ballroom in the former church and gardens that look out to the Ionian Sea give a wedding here real architectural weight, run with the polish guests expect of the brand. It is among the most complete luxury wedding settings in Sicily.

The honest counsel is that this is a working five star hotel in a busy resort town, so a wedding is built around private event spaces rather than a full buyout, and Taormina in high summer is hot and crowded. Marry here for the history, the views and the service, and lean on a planner who knows the hotel and the town's rhythms.

The setting

Taormina sits on a terrace of rock above the Ionian Sea on Sicily's east coast, a town of Greek and Roman antiquity that has drawn travellers for two centuries. The San Domenico stands at its highest reach, a monastery founded in the fourteenth century and later one of the island's grand hotels, restored and reopened under Four Seasons. Stone cloisters, vaulted corridors and tiered gardens look out to Mount Etna and the curve of the bay.

For a wedding, the spaces range from the Belvedere garden for an open air ceremony and dinner, to the Ancient Cloister for an aperitif, to the Chiesa ballroom in the former church for a grand reception. Guests stay on site at the hotel or in the boutique hotels of Taormina, a short walk through the old town.

Logistics, told straight
Getting there
Catania airport is around an hour by road, with connections across Europe in season. Taormina's old town is largely pedestrian, so arrange transfers and porterage and let guests settle without a car.
A working hotel
The San Domenico operates year round, so a wedding uses dedicated event spaces rather than a full buyout. Confirm which areas are private for your date and whether a larger takeover is possible for your numbers.
Heat and crowds
Taormina is hot and very busy in July and August. The shoulder months give kinder weather and a calmer town, which photographs better and travels easier for guests.
Wet weather
The ballroom and cloistered interiors give a genuine plan B, so a rare summer storm changes the room rather than the day. Agree the move indoors in advance.

Plan it well

A wedding at a grand hotel in a resort town rewards a planner who knows the spaces, the access and the suppliers of eastern Sicily. We will introduce one who works Taormina often.

What it costs and what to know

The practical things, told plainly.

What it costs

Pricing is on application and set per event. As an indicative April 2026 guide, a wedding at a Four Seasons of this stature, with the event spaces, catering and a block of rooms, is a six figure commitment in euros for a full celebration. Treat that as a range to confirm directly with the hotel.

The legal bit

A legally binding civil marriage in Italy is possible for non residents with documents arranged through your consulate and the local comune. Many couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony at the hotel. A planner manages the paperwork either way.

Capacity in practice

The Chiesa ballroom seats a reception of around 300, with the open air courtyard and gardens suited to ceremonies and dinners of roughly 200 to 250. Numbers depend on the spaces and the layout, so confirm the figure for your plan with the hotel.

When to marry here

May, June, September and October give warm days and a calmer Taormina. July and August are hot and crowded. The gardens look their best in the shoulder months, so favour them for an outdoor ceremony.

Common questions

San Domenico Palace, answered.

Is this the hotel from The White Lotus?

+

Yes. The San Domenico Palace, a Four Seasons hotel, was the main filming location for the Sicilian season of the television series, which has added to its profile. The draw for a wedding is the same as it was on screen, a monastery setting with views of Etna and the bay.

How many guests can it host?

+

The Chiesa ballroom seats a reception of around 300, with the courtyard and gardens suited to ceremonies and dinners of roughly 200 to 250. The right figure depends on the spaces you take, so confirm it with the hotel.

Can guests stay at the hotel?

+

Yes. Guests can stay on site at the Four Seasons, with a room block arranged for your wedding, and the boutique hotels of Taormina offer more options a short walk through the old town. Block book early for the summer.

When is the best time to marry here?

+

May, June, September and October give warm weather and a calmer town. July and August are hot and Taormina is very busy, so the shoulder months are kinder for an outdoor ceremony and for travelling guests.
