Our verdict

The grand option on Lake Como, a lakefront palace and botanical park that swallows a large guest list with ease, where the scale itself is the statement.

Where the lake's famous small villas cap you at a hundred, Villa Erba goes the other way. Set on the Cernobbio shore in an immense private park, it was the family home of the film director Luchino Visconti and stood in for the lakeside scenes in Ocean's Twelve. The historic villa and its grand salons sit beside a modern exhibition pavilion, which is the honest reason it carries numbers few villas can. If you have a big wedding and want Como without compromise on the guest list, this is the one.

Two honest caveats. Villa Erba is not licensed for a legally binding civil ceremony, so couples hold a symbolic blessing here and complete the legal marriage elsewhere. And there is no accommodation on site, so guests stay across Cernobbio and Como. Plan it with someone who knows the park, and the scale becomes a gift rather than a logistics headache.

Getting there
Cernobbio sits at the southern end of Lake Como, around 45 minutes from Milan airports by road, with the villa reached easily by car or a short lake transfer. Guests can also arrive by boat to the private landing.
The legal bit
Villa Erba is not licensed for a legally binding civil ceremony. Most couples marry legally at a town hall or at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in the park. A planner explains the current options.
Where guests stay
There is no accommodation on site. Cernobbio and Como town have grand lakefront hotels and smaller guesthouses within a short drive. Block book early, since Como fills up in peak months.
Wet weather
Unlike many small villas, Villa Erba has substantial indoor space in its historic salons and pavilion, so a large wedding has a genuine covered fallback rather than a cramped one.

What it costs

As an indicative July 2025 guide, venue hire at Villa Erba starts around EUR 25,000 plus VAT, with a full wedding for a large guest list typically landing well into six figures once catering, production and a marquee are added.

Treat all figures as indicative ranges and confirm directly with the venue.

Style, setting and who it suits

A villa for the big celebration.

Villa Erba is a late nineteenth century villa set in one of the largest private parks on the lake, its lawns running from the historic house down to the water. Ceremonies often take place at a romantic wrought iron cupola in the grounds or on the lawn by the shore, while dinner moves into the frescoed salons of the villa or a marquee in the gardens. The scale is the point. This is the venue couples choose when they have two or three hundred people to seat and want them all on the Como shoreline, not split across two locations.

It suits a confident, larger wedding rather than an intimate elopement. For thirty guests the park can feel cavernous, and the venue itself notes it is best suited to events of at least forty to fifty people. For a hundred and fifty or three hundred, it is one of very few addresses on Lake Como that works without compromise. Pair it with a planner who has run a big production in the park, and the famous Como backdrop does the rest.

Can we legally marry at the villa?

+

Villa Erba is not licensed for a legally binding civil ceremony. Most couples complete the legal marriage at a town hall or at home and hold a symbolic blessing in the grounds. A planner explains the current options for a legal ceremony nearby.

Is there accommodation on site?

+

What does a wedding here cost?

+

+

The Lake Como season runs from May to October, with June and September the most reliable for warm, settled weather and the gardens at their best. July and August are hotter and busier, and the lake is at its fullest.
