Private island wedding venues in the Algarve

Off the city of Faro lies the Ria Formosa, a lagoon of barrier islands and sandbanks. On one of them, Ilha Deserta, a single solar powered restaurant on an otherwise empty island gives the Algarve its one true island wedding.

Last reviewed March 2026. Capacities and prices are indicative and should be confirmed with each venue.
Our verdict

The Algarve does not have a string of hireable private islands. It has one genuine island wedding, on Ilha Deserta off Faro, and it is special precisely because it is the only one.

What you gain is a deserted barrier island in a protected lagoon, reached only by boat, with miles of empty sand and a single elegant restaurant.

What you trade is scale and certainty. Numbers are small, the island is a nature reserve with rules, and weather and tides shape the day.

The quick answer

A private island wedding in the Algarve really means one place. Ilha Deserta, also called Ilha da Barreta, is an uninhabited barrier island in the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a short boat ride from Faro. Its only building is O Estamine, a solar powered restaurant that hosts intimate ceremonies and dinners on the sand. This is a small, exclusive, weather dependent island day rather than a grand estate wedding, so numbers stay low and a local planner and a boat plan matter. For larger island style days the Algarve points you instead to its beach and clifftop venues on the mainland.

Why an island in the Ria Formosa

A lagoon of sand, and one deserted island.

The Ria Formosa is a coastal lagoon that runs along the eastern Algarve, a maze of channels, salt marsh and low barrier islands that shield the mainland from the Atlantic. It is a protected natural park, alive with flamingos and seabirds, and most of its islands are nature first, with small fishing communities or none at all. This is not a coast of villa islands you can buy out. It is something rarer, a wild lagoon where one island has been opened, gently, to a wedding.

That island is Ilha Deserta, also known as Ilha da Barreta, the southernmost point of mainland Portugal. It is a long, narrow ribbon of sand, around seven kilometres end to end and only a few hundred metres wide, reached by ferry or private boat from Faro. Its single building is O Estamine, a low timber restaurant run with real care for the place, powered by solar energy with its own water treatment, serving Portuguese seafood on a terrace above the dunes. A ceremony here is barefoot and elemental, sand underfoot, the lagoon on one side and the open ocean on the other.

The honest cautions are scale, nature and weather. This is an intimate island, not a venue for a large seated reception, so confirm the maximum numbers and the layout directly before you fall in love with the idea. The island is a protected reserve with environmental rules, and everything from chairs to flowers to your guests arrives and leaves by boat, which a local planner must choreograph against the tides. The Atlantic can turn, so build a weather and crossing plan into the day. Marry here for the romance of the only true island wedding on the coast, not for the certainty of a hotel ballroom.

The venue list

The Algarve's island wedding, told honestly.

We will not pad this list to make it look longer. There is one real island wedding venue on this coast, and then there are the wider Ria Formosa islands that frame it. We tell you which is bookable and which is simply beautiful to know about.

Context
Tavira and Culatra

Ilha de Tavira and Ilha da Culatra are the other barrier islands, with small communities, beach bars and seasonal restaurants. They are wonderful to know and to visit, but they are not exclusive use wedding estates, so we name them as scenery rather than as venues.

Cost and logistics

The practical things, told straight.

An island wedding is not cheaper for being small. Boats, a protected island and a single supplier on site shape the cost in their own way. Treat every figure as indicative and confirm directly, as the headcount, the crossing and the season move the total more than any single line.

What it costs

As an indicative March 2026 guide, an intimate island day here often lands between EUR 25,000 and EUR 90,000 all in, depending on numbers, the boat charter and how much is brought across. It is an intimate celebration by nature, so the cost sits in logistics and exclusivity rather than in a large guest count. Confirm hire terms and minimum spends directly.

Getting there

Faro airport is well connected across Europe and only minutes from the marina. From there the island is a short ferry or private boat crossing. Plan the boats around the tides and around your timings, and hold a contingency for weather, as the lagoon is open to the Atlantic.

The legal bit

A legal civil marriage in Portugal involves notice and paperwork that takes planning for visiting couples, so many marry legally at a register office or at home and hold a symbolic ceremony on the island. A local planner will confirm the current route for your nationality.

The nature park rules

Ilha Deserta sits inside the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a protected reserve. That shapes what can be built, lit and amplified, and asks for a light footprint. Confirm what is permitted in writing well ahead, and work with a planner who knows the park and the restaurant.

Planners and vendors

An island day lives or dies on the logistics.

Every chair, every stem and every guest reaches Ilha Deserta by boat, against the tide and the wind, so this is a day that rewards a planner who knows the Ria Formosa and the restaurant intimately. A good Algarve planner will hold the boats, the park permissions and a weather plan, and bring the florists, photographers and musicians who have worked the island before. Tell us your numbers and your date and we will introduce the right one.

Common questions

Island Algarve, answered.

Can you really marry on a private island in the Algarve?

+

Yes, on one. Ilha Deserta, an uninhabited barrier island off Faro, hosts intimate ceremonies and dinners at its single restaurant, O Estamine. It is the one genuine island wedding setting on the coast. The other Ria Formosa islands are beautiful but are not exclusive use venues.

How many guests can the island hold?

+

It is an intimate setting served by one restaurant, so numbers are limited and capacity is the first thing to confirm directly. This is a day for a smaller, close party rather than a large reception. If your guest list is long, the Algarve's mainland beach and clifftop venues will serve you better.

How do guests get to the island?

+

By boat from Faro, either the regular ferry or a private charter, a short crossing through the lagoon. Timings need to be planned around the tides, and it is wise to hold a weather contingency, as the island faces the open Atlantic.

When is the best time to marry here?

+

Late spring and early autumn, around May, June and September, give warm, settled weather and calmer seas than the peak of high summer, when the Algarve is hot and busy. The shoulder months suit an outdoor island day best.

Are there rules because it is a nature reserve?

+

Yes. The island lies within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, so there are environmental rules on building, lighting, sound and footprint. Confirm what is allowed in writing well ahead and plan a light touch celebration, guided by a planner who knows the park.
