Getting married in Mexico

From the Caribbean coast around Tulum and the Riviera Maya to Pacific Los Cabos and the colonial calm of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico holds several very different weddings, choose a region to see the venues we rate.

The quick answer

Mexico divides into the Caribbean coast (Cancun, the Riviera Maya and Tulum), the Pacific (Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta) and the colonial highlands of San Miguel de Allende, and each asks for a different kind of day. Aim for the dry season from late November to April, well clear of the summer hurricane months, and decide early whether you want a legal civil wedding here or a symbolic ceremony with the paperwork done at home.

The two coasts and the highlands feel like different countries. The Riviera Maya and Tulum trade on turquoise water and resort infrastructure; Los Cabos pairs desert with the Pacific; and San Miguel de Allende offers cobbled streets, courtyards and a cooler, drier climate that suits couples who want culture over beach. Where you marry shapes the suppliers, the budget and the guest experience far more than the photographs let on.

Time it carefully. The dry months from December to April bring the kindest weather, while June to November is hurricane season on both coasts and high summer is hot and humid. On the legal side, a civil marriage in Mexico is possible but involves translated and apostilled documents, witnesses and, in some states, a blood test, so many couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony here. A good local planner will tell you honestly which path is simpler for your dates.
