The best wedding venues in Rethymno

A Venetian harbour town crowned by a great fortress, with traditional Cretan estates and sea view venues all around it.

Written by Fredrik Filipsson · Last reviewed July 2025.
The verdict

Rethymno is the most atmospheric of the Cretan towns, a Venetian and Ottoman old town under the great Fortezza, with the sea on one side and the mountains on the other.

Its weddings happen on recreated Cretan farms, sea view estates and clifftop terraces, with real local character rather than resort gloss.

It is hot and busy in high summer, so spring and early autumn reward you most, and the venues are spread out, so plan transfers.

The short answer

For a Rethymno wedding, the traditional estates lead. Agreco Farm is a faithfully recreated seventeenth century Cretan farm near the town that seats up to around two hundred for an alfresco dinner, while Pavlaki Estate offers a reception venue with sweeping sea views from a high point. For a setting in the heart of things, clifftop venues such as Cavo look over the old town and the Fortezza. Late spring and early autumn give the kindest weather, and the best venues book far ahead.

The shortlist

The Rethymno shortlist, on merit

Real venues we rate in and around the town. The order is our honest read of the wedding, not a paid placement. Decide first whether you want a traditional Cretan estate or a sea view setting, since it changes the whole feel of the day.

A working shortlist for the Rethymno coast.
01

Agreco Farm

Near Rethymno

A faithfully recreated traditional Cretan farm.

In the hills above Rethymno, Agreco is a recreated seventeenth century Cretan farm, with a stone chapel, a watermill and gardens, built around organic estate produce. Alfresco dining seats up to around two hundred guests with the taverna for more intimate gatherings, and the farm to table feasting is the headline. It suits couples who want authentic Crete, food and ritual at the centre of the day.

02

Pavlaki Estate

Above Rethymno

A reception estate with sweeping sea views.

A larger reception venue near Rethymno set on a high point, Pavlaki Estate offers a sweeping view down to the sea and the room to host both intimate and sizeable celebrations. It suits couples who want the coastline as a backdrop and the space to scale up the guest list, with the town and beaches close by.

Cavo

Rethymno coast

A clifftop setting over the old town and the Fortezza.

Perched at the edge of the sea, Cavo looks out over the Mediterranean toward the old town and the medieval Fortezza, with suites on site for the couple. It suits a smaller, view led celebration that wants the town and the fortress in the frame, with dinner as the sun goes down over the water.

Planning context

The Cretan practicalities, plainly

Marrying legally

Greece is one of the more straightforward European countries for foreign couples to marry legally, with civil ceremonies arranged through the local town hall once documents are prepared and translated. Many couples still hold a symbolic ceremony at the venue, which a local planner arranges.

The season that ruins it

July and August are very hot in Crete and the coast is at its busiest. May, June and September give warm evenings and softer crowds, and are the considered choices for an outdoor celebration here.

Getting guests there

Rethymno sits between Chania and Heraklion airports, each around an hour away by road. Guests fly into either, and you will need transfers between the town hotels and the venue for the evening.

The logistics couples underestimate

Venues are spread between the hills and the coast, so transfers and timings matter, and an open hilltop or clifftop needs a wind and shade plan. Decide early whether you want a farm or a sea view, as each carries its own logistics.

What it costs

The numbers, told straight.

A Rethymno wedding typically runs from about €30,000 to €120,000 all in for 60 to 150 guests, reviewed July 2025, with a large estate celebration and serious production at the top of that band.

Crete is gentler on the budget than the Cyclades, with strong local catering and flowers, and a traditional farm builds much of the feasting into the day. A sea view venue trades a little of that value for the view.

Transfers, lighting, a band and any marquee or shade lift the figure, so plan for them rather than treating them as extras.

Figures are indicative ranges reviewed July 2025 and will move with season, guest count, and exchange rates. Confirm directly with each venue.

Planners and vendors

Who to bring in, and why

Planners

A Crete planner who knows the Rethymno venues secures the date, manages the documents and transfers, and assembles a trusted local team. In an area where suppliers travel between hills and coast, their relationships are worth the fee.

Photographers

Rethymno rewards a photographer who can work the old town, the Fortezza and the evening light over the sea. Ask to see a full Cretan wedding rather than a styled shoot.

Food and wine

Cretan cooking is one of the joys of marrying here, so lean into the local feasting, raki and island wine. Estate kitchens and trusted caterers handle the long alfresco dinner the setting calls for.
